Trenchcoat (1983) Disney Movie

Rating: PGLength: 91 mins.Year: 1983
Cast: Margot Kidder, Robert Hays and Gila von Weitershausen

Disney Movie Rating:
50 out of 100. Total of 2 votes.

Trenchcoat (1983) Movie Description:

The 1983 Disney Studios production of Trenchcoat is a sharp diversion from the typical Disney-related product. Allegedly, Disney executives were leery of the somewhat "adult" script and did little in the way of promoting the film. Compared to 21st-century releases, the film seems tame in comparison, but in 1983 Disney was still clinging to Walt Disney's credo of wholesomeness.

Margot Kidder plays a mystery writer who flies to Malta to do research for her latest project. Quite coincidentally, she finds herself involved in an international plutonium smuggling operation, which terrifies her, although the writer in her is captivated by the espionage. Mix-ups (both intentional and accidental), inept police, bumbling secret agents and nuclear secrets dot the storyline, with ample comedy thrown in for good measure.

Kidder is right at home with the "damsel-in-distress" role, while Robert Hays is suitably unemotional, yet dashing as, well it's unclear just exactly what his role is other than Kidder's love interest.

Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) Disney Movie

Rating: PGLength: 95 mins.Year: 1983
Cast: Jason Robards, Jonathan Pryce and Diane Ladd

Disney Movie Rating:
62.55 out of 100. Total of 11 votes.

Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) Movie Description:

Something Wicked This Way Comes, a 1983 Walt Disney Productions release, is an adaptation of Ray Bradbury's same-named novel. Bradbury, one of the masters of modern science fiction, also wrote the screenplay.

A traveling carnival comes to town, and like most small-town kids, Will and Jim can't wait to go see everything the sideshows have to offer. And also, like many small-town kids, the boys are unable to control their enthusiasm and curiosity, so they sneak into the carnival and make some terrifying discoveries.

The owner of the carnival is the aptly-named Mr. Dark, whose fancy is evilly seducing carnival-goers with the lure of fulfilling their darkest desires.

The film is very dark, very un-Disney-like, and delves deeply into the age old good vs. evil issue, and the powerful influence that greed can hold over the best of us.

The late Jack Clayton directed, with Jason Robards, Jonathan Pryce, Diane Ladd and Royal Dano among the cast members.

Night Crossing (1982) Disney Movie

Rating: PGLength: 107 mins.Year: 1982
Cast: John Hurt, Jane Alexander and Doug McKeon

Disney Movie Rating:
64.67 out of 100. Total of 3 votes.

Night Crossing (1982) Movie Description:

A true story about the daring escape from East Germany to West Germany via hot air balloon is the subject of the 1982 Walt Disney Productions' drama, Night Crossing. Delbert Mann, Academy Award winning director for 1953's Marty, called the shots on Night Crossing.

The Berlin Wall is the "goal line" that the Strelzyk and Wetzel families plan long and hard for, and the film spares little in the way of detailing their exhaustive and risky preparation. An earlier attempt to breach the Wall by bulldozer fails miserably, only adding to the importance and urgency surrounding the second attempt.

The actual flight is a nail-biter, with several crucial factors being left, essentially, to luck. Eight people clamber aboard the home-made balloon, at night nonetheless, and their journey seems excruciatingly slow. But, they make it, and are hailed as heroes.

Night Crossing stars John Hurt, Beau Bridges, Jane Alexander and Doug McKeon.

Tex (1982) Disney Movie

Rating: PGLength: 103 mins.Year: 1982
Cast: Matt Dillon, Jim Metzler and Meg Tilly

Disney Movie Rating:
65 out of 100. Total of 2 votes.

Tex (1982) Movie Description:

Oklahoma is the setting for the 1982 Walt Disney Productions adaptation of S.E. Hinton's Tex. Tim Hunter directed, later going on to achieve critical praise for both film and television works such as River's Edge, Twin Peaks and Mad Men.

Matt Dillon stars as the youngest of the two McCormick brothers who are left to fend for themselves after their mother dies and their father, a traveling rodeo rider, is rarely at home. This coming-of-age teen drama is notable for its' sometimes brutally honest realism, including such usually non-Disney issues as alcohol and drug use, sexual activity and other assorted "no-no's."

Dillon is superb as the curious, uncertain Tex, struggling to make sense of a world he's found himself in. Jim Metzler, as older brother Mason, is also excellent, while Meg Tilly, as Tex's first love, is effective. Other notable cast members include Ben Johnson, Emilio Estevez and Nell Carter.

Dillon would go on to appear in two other adaptations of Hinton's works, The Outsiders and Rumble Fish.
