The Devil and Max Devlin (1981) Movie Description:

The 1981 comedy from Disney, The Devil and Max Devlin, takes on the familiar story (Angel (The Devil and Daniel Webster, Damn Yankees, etc.) of Satan attempting to make a deal with a mortal in exchange for (in this instance) additional souls. This production is directed by Steven Hilliard Stone who also co-produced along with Jerome Courtland.

Elliott Gould plays Devlin, a less-than-magnaminous LA landlord whose early-on death sets up the storyline. Descending into Hell, Max is met by the aptly-named Barney Satan, apparently a "meet-and-greeter" who offers Devlin a deal: A return to Earth in exchange for three signed, sealed and delivered souls within three months. Max agrees, and sets about fulfilling his end of the bargain.

The Devil and Max Devlin was written by Mary Rodgers, who earlier wrote the successful Freaky Friday, a 1976 Disney production.

Television legend Bill Cosby is perfect as Barney, playing the devilish role with aloofness and detachment. Susan Anspach, Julie Budd and Adam Rich also appear.
