Smith (1969) Movie Description:
The issue of racial injustice is addressed in the 1969 Walt Disney Productions film, Smith!. Starring Glenn Ford, Nancy Olson, Dean Jagger and Frank Ramirez, Smith! is directed by Disney favorite, Michael O'Herlihy who also directed The Fighting Prince of Donegal for Disney.
Accused of murdering Sam Hardy, a crime he's innocent of, Jimmyboy (Ramirez), a Native American, shows up at the Smith ranch. Smith (Ford) is white, but was reared by a Native American and is sympathetic due to his own experience. Smith has to persuade Jimmyboy from fleeing to Canada to escape the clutches of the local sheriff, who remains unconvinced of the Native American's innocence. With Smith's assistance, Jimmyboy agrees to surrender to local authorities. Smith even agrees to appear in court on Jimmyboy's behalf as a character witness.
Both sides of the issue are portrayed fairly unbiasedly in Smith!, with Ford, in particular, giving a strong, impressive performance.
