The Disney's Sword and the Rose (1953) Movie Description:

The third Disney film produced in Great Britain, 1953's The Sword and the Rose is an adaption of the 1898 period-piece novel, When Knighthood Was In Flower, set in Tudor-era England.

King Henry VIII is determined, for political reasons, to arrange a marriage between his sister, Mary Tudor, and Louis XII, King of France. Mary, however, perhaps even more headstrong than her brother, has fallen for commoner soldier Charles Brandon. Also in the mix is the Duke of Buckingham, who has designs on Mary Plotting and scheming abound, climaxed by a duel between the two suitors.

The costuming and cast are stalwart, with Glynis Johns portraying a spirited Mary, while Richard Todd as Charles Brandon lends gallantry and bravado to his role as the determined outsider. James Robert Justice is suitably lusty and domineering as the legendary Henry VIII, and Michael Gough as the Duke of Buckingham blends the proper amount of evil and ambition in his portrayal.
